European Mobility Week - it’s time to go green!

Mobility Week 1

Why not consider an electric vehicle for your next car rental? If you’re thinking of buying an electric car to contribute to a greener environment this is the ideal way to see if it suits you.

Electric car rental with Europcar is no different from renting a fuel vehicle. You collect it fully charged, but don´t need to return it charged at the end of the rental – saving you time and costs.

Your vehicle comes with the equipment you need in case you need to recharge, although the average full charge will last for 400km.

At Europcar we fully support European Mobility Week – which has been set up to help the future of the planet. Read on to find out more.

What is European Mobility Week?

European Mobility Week is a great initiative that started in 2002. It aims to call on European cities and towns to devote a week to highlighting the importance of sustainable mobility. This is the perfect opportunity to raise awareness of green travel and test out the newest forms of clean mobility.

The event has been created to help us progress towards a greener way of doing things when we travel, whether short or long distance.

This year, European Mobility week will be starting on Saturday 16 September and lasts until Friday 22 September.

Many cities and towns who take part in European Mobility Week decide to dedicate a day to making their towns completely “car-free”. For example, last year Brussels decided to hold a car-free Sunday on 18 September. The event is a huge success every year, as Europe makes some of its largest areas car-free zones. Residents benefit massively as it allows people to rediscover the peacefulness of their city.

Whilst the aim is not to be completely without vehicles, it raises awareness of the value of electric vehicles.

Sustainability

Increasingly, countries across the globe are looking to find more efficient and more environmentally friendly methods of transportation. Never has there been such consideration of how our commuting affects the world we live in.

Transport currently accounts for 24% of global carbon emissions and, unfortunately, this is a figure that continues to grow.

The negatives of not changing our transportation methods can include various kinds of pollution:

° noise

° air

° ground

° water

What does sustainable travel mean?

Sustainable travel refers to “green” travel which has a lower impact on the environment than conventional travel. It’s about minimising the damage we do to the environment and balancing our needs vs the needs of our future children and generations. We have to think long-term about protecting the environment and the planet.

We know that some people still need to travel long distances to their places of work, and that’s fine. But sustainability is about everyone considering whether they can commute in a more environmentally friendly way, whether that’s walking, cycling, carpooling, car sharing or switching to electric vehicles.

Electric Vehicles

Mobility Week 2

You may wonder what the future of transport is going to look like.

All major car manufacturers believe that electric cars are the future. Which is why they are investing billions into their production and development. Here at Europcar we also see the most efficient way of moving forward as the use of electric vehicles.

We understand that we will never be able to completely replace cars as they are an ideal transport form. This is why we’re giving you the flexibility to rent cars the green way and switch to an electric vehicle when you need to hire a car.

Below is a list of some of the benefits of going green when renting a car:

° it can save you money thanks to lower running costs

° you’ll enjoy a quieter ride

° you’ll have peace of mind that you’re helping the environment

° you’re contributing to a cleaner environment

° lots of cities now offer free parking for electric vehicles

° there are no congestion charges in many cities

The number of electric charging points is constantly increasing, even in remote areas. This makes renting an electric vehicle a viable option for a road trip as well as standard car hire.

What can you do to support sustainable travel?

Mobility Week 3

Everyone should play a part in supporting climate change. It’s no longer a choice – it’s essential to protect the planet’s future. Ways to support this initiative include:

° renting electric vehicles when possible

° switching your personal vehicle to a hybrid or electric vehicle

° carpooling more often

° cycling whenever you can

Make the switch to electric today! Be sure to check out Europcar’s range of electric cars when you next need to rent a car on holiday or at home.

As well as for personal use, we also offer a range of commercial electric vehicles for your company to rent, both short and long-term. Get in touch with us to find out more.
